Maker’s Mark is a small-batch Kentucky bourbon known for its wheated mash bill and hand-dipped red wax seal. Established in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. in Loretto, Kentucky, Maker's Mark has a rich heritage rooted in a commitment to craftsmanship and quality.
Unlike many bourbons that use rye as a secondary grain, Maker's Mark utilizes red winter wheat, which imparts a smoother, softer flavor profile. This choice sets it apart in the competitive bourbon market, appealing to both connoisseurs and casual drinkers.
The core expression is balanced and mellow with caramel, vanilla, and light spice. It’s smooth enough for newcomers but layered enough for whiskey fans to enjoy neat. The wheat in the mash bill gives it a softer mouthfeel than rye-heavy bourbons. It’s a reliable choice for Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, or a simple pour over ice.
Maker’s 46 is finished with seared French oak staves, adding deeper spice and baking spice notes. The extra oak brings cinnamon, nutmeg, and a longer finish while keeping the brand’s signature sweetness. It’s a good pick for those who want more complexity without stepping into high-proof territory. Maker’s Mark 46 is one of their more decorated offerings, having received multiple awards and accolades - even one as recently as this year (2026).
Maker’s Mark 101 Proof Bourbon is a richer, bolder take on their classic wheated bourbon. The higher proof for more warmth and deeper flavor. Expect caramel, toasted oak, and baking spice with a long, smooth finish - just like the core expression, but with more oomph.
Maker's Mark 46 was recently (2026) recognized as World’s Best Finished Bourbon at the World Whiskies Awards. Other bottles have earned Gold/Double Gold awards at the International Spirits Challenge, International Wine and Spirits Competition, London Spirits Competition, and San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The distillery itself was the first in the world to receive certification for soil health and regenerative agriculture in 2023. In 2022, it was the largest distillery in the world and the first in Kentucky to achieve a B Corp Certification.
Maker’s Mark suits people who want a smooth, classic bourbon that’s easy to enjoy. Meant for new whiskey drinkers and seasoned drinkers alike, Maker's Mark is always right on the money.
