Located on the legendary Highway29 in Napa Valley, The Prisoner Wine Company brings you more than another bottle of wine. This is a brand that, since its creation, has stood against oppression while embracing creativity. It has raised conversations about ending mass incarceration and the urgent need for reform, also known as their Prison Reform.
Instantly recognizable from its label, which was inspired by the 19th-century Francisco Goya etching titled Le Petit Prisonnier, The Prisoner and its Red Blend is quite an intriguing bottle. They work with over 100 growers in Northern California - all because they want you to look at red blends in a different light.
So, what’s in the Red Blend? In it, you get Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Sirah, Syrah, Merlot, and Malbec. It might seem like a random mash of wines, but they all blend together beautifully. The taste can be dialed down to red and black fruits with a hint of sweet spice. The aroma gives off that same fruity blend with a touch of caramelized vanilla, nutmeg, and toasted coconut.
Michael Franz from the Tasting Panel gave it 91 points in 2025. He noted that it is “Packed with very ripe flavors, 15.5% stated alcohol, and plenty of coconut-scented oak riding atop its mostly black-toned fruit. Notable sweetness helps balance out the 35% new oak and buffers the wine’s tannin load, resulting in a very big wine with forgivingly soft texture."
So, what are you waiting for? The Prisoner Red Blend should be behind bars - yours, in particular. Have it ready to pour when guests arrive, or bring it along for your next dinner party.
