Arette Artesanal Suave Reposado comes from the Orendain family in the town of Tequila, Jalisco. Brothers Eduardo and Jaime Orendain launched Arette in 1986 at the historic El Llano distillery. The family has been making tequila there for generations.
The process is old school. Agave cooks slowly for 48 hours in brick ovens. It ferments with wild yeast in open tanks, then is double distilled in copper-coil pot stills. The tequila then rests in used American white oak barrels, many of them ex-bourbon. Arette bottles it at 40% ABV.
Lift the glass and cooked agave comes first, with vanilla and a little oak. The sip is earthy and agave-driven. Warm cinnamon, clove and a pinch of black pepper join the vanilla and wood. The finish is fairly short and leaves earthy agave with gentle spice.
This is a reposado that lets the agave lead instead of the barrel. It feels medium-bodied and easy, so it works for both sipping and mixing.
Pour it neat or on a single ice cube, or use it in a fresh lime Margarita. It goes well with grilled meats, carne asada tacos and ceviche. If you want an honest, family-made reposado at a fair price, put this on your list.
