Lush, full of fruit flavors, and deep purple in color, Malbec is a delicious red wine most commonly associated with Argentina. Malbec wine has a bit of a troubled history: early Malbec grape varieties were extra susceptible to disease, frost, and rot, and in 1956, 75% of Malbec grapes in Bordeaux were ruined by frost. Argentinean Malbec vineyards continued to produce, leading to it becoming Argentina's national variety of grape.
Malbec wine can be identified by its deep purple hue, and aromas of plum and tobacco. The palate of Malbec is plush and smooth, with ripe tannins. Flavors common in Malbec are both sweet and savory, with notes of pomegranate, blackberry, coffee, tobacco, and oak.
