This drink is crafted from Cognac VSOP, yet its unique aging process means it cannot be labeled solely as Cognac under French regulations. It begins with Martell’s classic VSOP, where the youngest spirit rests for at least four years in French oak. The liquid is then finished in Kentucky Bourbon barrels, which is an uncommon approach for a Cognac house and adds a richer layer of character. It is usually bottled at 40% ABV and most often found in a 750 ml size.
The aroma is inviting, with caramelized pear, banana, vanilla, coconut, and gentle spice. The taste feels full and generous, offering ginger, candied plum, and a touch of toasted oak. The finish is smooth and rounded, helped by the influence of the bourbon casks. Its copper color with golden highlights adds to its elegance. Martell created Blue Swift as a tribute to its history as the first Cognac house to ship barrels to the United States in 1783. As one of the oldest houses, founded in 1715, Martell brings deep expertise to this spirit.
It is versatile enough to enjoy neat, on ice, or in cocktails like a Sazerac or Mint Julep. The base Cognac uses grapes from top regions, including the Borderies, and Martell’s clear-wine double distillation creates a pure spirit that absorbs cask flavors with ease. The Blue Swift bird on the label celebrates Martell’s global journey and spirit.
