Path Not Taken is Chapter 8 in the Little Book series from Freddie Noe at the James B. Beam Distilling Co. This time he set out to show where American rye whiskey could go next. It came out in May 2024.

The blend joins seven Kentucky straight whiskeys. The oldest is an 18-year-old high-rye bourbon. Next come an 11-year-old rye and a 7-year-old rye malt. Three 5-year-old ryes add contrast, made in Kentucky and Pennsylvania family styles. Their barrels range from a light char 1 to a heavy char 4. A 4-year-old rye rounds it out. It is bottled uncut at 118.2 proof, or 59.1% ABV.

In the glass it shows a deep copper with golden glints. The nose brings butterscotch, fresh dill and toasted rye bread. Floral notes and sweet apricot fill your mouth, backed by heavy oak. The finish stays warm and spicy, with dried fruit and a herbal edge.

At this strength, take your first sip neat and slow. A few drops of water or one ice cube will open it up. Try it with smoked meats, dark chocolate or a wedge of aged cheese.

This is a bottle for rye fans and blend lovers who like to compare notes. If you collect American whiskey, it makes a fine talking point on your shelf.
