Captain Morgan brand was founded in 1944 when Seagram Company first started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. Seagram’s CEO Samuel Bronfman purchased Captain Morgan brand from the Jamaican government as well as the rights to a rum by a Kingston pharmacy that sourced its spirits from the same distillery, Long Pond Distillery. They then spiced, aged, and bottled the rums. In 1985 the distillery was sold with the rights to Captain Morgan.
The rum brand was later sold to Diageo in 2001 and has remained under their brand since. Captain Morgan started selling in the United States in 1984. Captain Morgan is one of the largest spirit brands on American soil and has shaped the world with the flavors and spice used. Captain Morgan is distilled from sugar cane in column stills.
