Description
Tullamore D.E.W. comes from the town of Tullamore in County Offaly, where the whiskey was first made in 1829. The name honors Daniel E. Williams, the distillery manager who later owned it. He gave the whiskey his initials, D.E.W.
This is the original triple blend Irish whiskey. Grain whiskey brings sweetness, malt adds fruit, and pot still whiskey gives spice. All three are triple distilled for a soft, easy style. The blend matures in ex-bourbon barrels, ex-sherry butts and refill casks. Bourbon wood adds vanilla and oak, while sherry brings a nutty, dried-fruit touch.
The nose is light and lively, with citrus zest, malty cereal and a little spice. Charred oak and soft vanilla sit underneath. On the palate it feels soft and rounded. Sweet spice, caramel and vanilla meet hints of toasted wood. The finish is smooth and medium in length, with gentle warmth and a sweet edge.
It is the second-best-selling Irish whiskey in the world. This bottle won Gold at the 2014 International Spirits Challenge. In 2025 it also took Silver at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. It won Silver at the International Wine & Spirit Competition that year, too.
Next to a peaty single malt Scotch or a sweet bourbon, this is light and friendly. Sip it neat or over ice. It also makes a classic Irish Coffee, a Whiskey Sour or a simple highball with ginger ale. For snacks, try dark chocolate, mild cheese or smoked nuts.
