Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel (750Ml)

If you enjoy bold, flavorful wines, Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel is an easy bottle to love. The Seghesio family is based in Healdsburg, and Zinfandel is its specialty. Angela Seghesio bought many of the family vineyard sites between 1936 and 1962. Today about half the fruit comes from those certified sustainable estate vineyards.

In the 2020 vintage, the blend is 86% Zinfandel with 10% Petite Sirah and small amounts of Alicante Bouschet and other reds. The grapes come from Sonoma Valley, Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Dry Creek. The wine spends ten months in barrel. Most of that oak is neutral, so the fruit stays in front.

Swirl the glass and you will smell currant and plum. Savory touches of black olive, anise and allspice sit underneath. The first sip brings briary black raspberry. The palate is bold and well built, with supple, lively tannins. The finish is powerful and lasts a long time.

This bottling has a strong track record. According to the winery, Wine Spectator rated it 90 points or higher for eleven vintages in a row, up to 2019.

Serve it with rich, meaty dishes. Short ribs, braised pork belly and BBQ ribs are all great matches. It also works with grilled steak, burgers or gnocchi in a gorgonzola sauce. Open it a little early, or decant it, and let it breathe before dinner.
