This bourbon comes from Michter’s Distillery in small batches, and it is released in very limited quantities, which adds to its appeal. It goes through a careful two-step aging process that starts with Michter’s US*1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon. The first stage takes place in a fire-charred, new American white oak barrel, and this gives the spirit its classic depth. It is then aged again in a second barrel to build extra layers of flavor.
This second barrel is toasted instead of charred, so the heat gently draws out the wood’s natural sugars and creates a richer, sweeter profile. The wood for this barrel is air-dried for at least 18 months, sometimes even up to 24 months, and this slow drying process adds more complexity. The bourbon is bottled at 91.4 proof, which keeps the balance between strength and smoothness.
You can expect notes of campfire, cinnamon, pecan, and candied fruit, and the finish stays long and smooth with hints of baked pears, vanilla, and soft marshmallow. First released in Fall 2014, it quickly earned attention for its creative use of a toasted secondary barrel. Since Michter’s operates in Louisville, Kentucky and produces only limited amounts, this bottle often becomes highly sought after in stores.
