Mars Tsunuki offers a special single malt whisky that stands out because it is the first to be fully distilled and aged at the Mars Tsunuki Distillery in Minamisatsuma City, Kagoshima. The distillery sits in a basin that experiences hot summers and cold winters and this natural temperature swing helps the whisky mature faster while giving it a bold and expressive character.
Owned by Hombo Shuzo, a respected Japanese spirits company that has been crafting alcohol since 1872, the distillery brings a fresh style to the Mars lineup. This release was distilled between 2016 and 2017 and was aged for at least three years before being bottled in 2020. Most of the whisky rested in ex-Bourbon barrels while a small portion came from second-fill bourbon casks and the final bottling strength lands at a robust 59% ABV. Depending on the region, it is sold in either a 750 ml or 70 cl bottle.
The aroma carries sweet notes of vanilla, maple syrup, citrus, and fresh bread while the taste blends fruity and malty tones with hints of pear, apple, honey, toasted oak, and gentle spice. It ends with a long warm finish and light touches of cinnamon and pepper. Only 9,984 bottles were released, making it a rare and exciting expression.
