Hudson Back Room Deal is a New York straight rye with a smoky twist. Hudson Whiskey makes it at the Tuthilltown Spirits distillery. Hudson calls itself the first distillery in the Empire State since Prohibition. The mash bill is 95% New York rye and 5% malted barley. The whiskey ages for at least three years in new, charred American oak.

Then comes the deal in the back room. The rye gets a finish in barrels that once held peated Scotch. Those casks begin life as ex-bourbon barrels and cross the Atlantic. There they age smoky peated whisky. Then they return to New York and are filled with Hudson's straight rye. Classic rye spice meets soft peat smoke.

Smoke greets you first, softened by vanilla, apricot and brown sugar. The palate is bright and fruity. Black pepper, mint and rye spice weave through a layer of smoky peat. The finish is long and peaty, with a little sweetness at the end. It is a flavorful whiskey that rewards slow sipping.

It is bottled at 92 proof and is Empire Rye certified, so it meets New York State rye rules. It is also kosher certified. The store's original page lists a Double Gold from the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. In 2024 it earned Double Gold, 91 points and Best in Show at the TAG Global Spirits Awards.
