Description

Herradura Ultra is an añejo cristalino from Casa Herradura. The house has made tequila since 1870 and is now owned by Brown-Forman.

Ultra blends añejo with extra añejo tequilas aged in American white oak barrels. Every part spends at least 12 months in wood, and the extra añejo rests far longer. A touch of agave nectar goes in before filtering. Activated carbon then strips out the color, so the tequila pours crystal clear.

Do not let the clear look fool you. The nose brings sweet, lightly smoky cooked agave. On the palate you will find velvety vanilla, toasted nuts and caramel, with a hint of agave nectar. A soft touch of oak sits underneath. The finish is long and very smooth.

Herradura says Ultra has won 12 awards since its 2014 release, including Gold and Double Gold medals. VinePair rated it 89 points and called it balanced and easy to sip.

It is bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof). Sip it neat or over one large ice cube to enjoy the vanilla and agave. It also makes a smooth base for premium cocktails. Pair it with dark chocolate, coffee or aged cheese.
