Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge is a premium orange-flavored liqueur that combines elegance and tradition. It was created in 1880 by Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle in France and is famous for its smooth taste and long history. Unlike most orange liqueurs, it uses fine French Cognac as its base, which gives it a rich and warm flavor. The liqueur gets its orange taste from the distilled essence of bitter Seville oranges, which are hand-picked while still green to capture their fresh oils.
Bottled at 40% alcohol (80 proof), Grand Marnier is stronger than many other liqueurs. Its blend includes about 51% Cognac and 49% bitter orange liqueur, creating a perfect balance between fruity brightness and smooth richness. The bitter oranges are often grown on the Marnier-Lapostolle family’s plantation in the Caribbean to maintain high quality.
It has a deep golden amber color and a taste that mixes zesty orange with hints of vanilla, toffee, and oak from the Cognac. Grand Marnier is a type of Curaçao liqueur and is enjoyed both on its own and in famous recipes like Crêpes Suzette, Sidecar, and Cadillac Margarita. Its classic bottle with a red ribbon represents timeless French style and craftsmanship.
