Born in Milan in the mid-19th century, Fernet Branca Liqueur is made of a 27-part concoction of herbs and botanicals… That and bartenders’ blood, sweat, and tears - but we can't vouch for the latter.
On the nose, the aroma is immediate. You get a whiff of bright menthol and eucalyptus with
bitter orange peel and myrrh, following straight after. You also get spice, but it is more of an undertone. The palate reveals distinctly bitter root and herbal tannins. Sweetness is present but restrained.
As one can easily surmise, Fernet has been around for a long time. Still, it's getting its flowers! A Gold Medal at the 2025 International Wine & Spirit Competition, another Gold at the Bartender Spirits Awards 2025, a Best Product of the Year 2024 at the Lisbon Bar Show, and Silver Medals at the Bartender Spirits Awards 2024 and 2023 will tell you it's a fantastic bottle.
Fernet Branca is not a crowd pleaser in the casual sense. Neat and chilled, it functions as a digestive; small amounts will add depth and bitterness to a stirred drink, and an amaro complement if we've ever seen one. It is a statement, a palate cleanser, and a conversation starter that rewards curiosity and restraint.
