This Italian herbal liqueur, known as an amaro, is made in the fernet style and crafted by Fratelli Branca Distillerie in Milan, Italy. First created in 1845, it remains one of the most iconic amaros in the world. With an alcohol content of 39% (78 proof) and a 750ml bottle size, it offers a balanced yet bold drinking experience.
Fernet-Branca is made from a secret blend of over 27 herbs, roots, and spices, including saffron, myrrh, chamomile, gentian, and rhubarb. This combination gives it a complex and bitter flavor, layered with herbal, menthol, and slightly spicy notes. The liqueur is aged in oak barrels for one year, which softens its intensity and adds a smooth, rich texture with a warm, lingering finish.
Traditionally, it’s enjoyed neat after meals to help with digestion, but it’s also versatile in cocktails. In Argentina, it’s famously mixed with Coca-Cola to create “Fernet con Coca.” In the United States, especially in San Francisco, it’s beloved by bartenders and known as “The Bartender’s Handshake.” Its dark coffee-brown color and intriguing taste make it a standout choice for those who appreciate bold, herbal spirits like in classic drinks such as the Hanky Panky or Toronto.
