Basil Hayden's Dark Rye is a blend with an unusual twist. Kentucky straight rye is married with Canadian rye whisky from Alberta Distillery. A small dash of California port goes in too. The port adds gentle sweetness and a deep ruby color. It is bottled at an easy 80 proof, or 40% ABV.

You will notice oak on the nose, balanced by dark berries and molasses. The palate brings caramel, dried fruit and more oak. Spice stays in the background, and the mouthfeel is soft and round. The finish lingers with dried fruit, a hint of sweetness and gentle rye spice.

Because the port is blended in rather than used as a cask finish, the fruit comes through clearly. It is a friendly pick if you enjoy red wine and whiskey. Its fruit-forward style is also a nice bridge for fans of flavored whiskey, even though it is a true rye blend.
