Ardbeg Ardcore (750Ml)

Description

Ardbeg Ardcore is a limited edition Islay single malt with a punk rock streak. Ardbeg released it for Ardbeg Day at the Fèis Ìle festival in 2022. The distillery has been making whisky on Islay since 1815. For Ardcore, the team tried something new. They used roasted black malt for the first time, kilned at very high heat.

That roasted malt changes everything. The nose brings charcoal and sweet smoke, then toast, coffee grounds and sticky molasses. A few garden herbs peek through. On the palate you get cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Peanut brittle, toffee, aniseed and a squeeze of barbecued lime follow. The finish is long and sweet, with toffee and soot. Bill Lumsden, who leads whisky making at Ardbeg, said it tastes like biting on a spiky ball.

Ardcore came out in two strengths. The Ardbeg Day bottling was 46%. The Ardbeg Committee version was stronger, at 50.1%. Both were sold in small numbers, and they are now hard to find.

Pour it neat first, then try a few drops of water. Smoked meats, aged cheese and dark chocolate desserts all suit its roast and smoke. This one is made for whisky enthusiasts who love peat with a dark, toasty edge. If you usually drink light, gentle malts, it may feel like a lot. Collectors will want it for its short run and bold label.
