Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye is the rye sister to Rare Breed Bourbon. It blends Kentucky straight ryes aged four, six, and eight years. The whiskey goes into the bottle at 112.2 proof, uncut, exactly as it came out of the barrel. Nobody chill filters it either.

Wild Turkey has made whiskey on a hilltop in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, for more than seven decades. Its water comes from the Kentucky River and filters through limestone, which strips out iron. The distillery has used the same yeast strain for over 60 years. Barrels are new American white oak with a heavy No. 4 char. Jimmy and Eddie Russell, father and son, guide the whiskey.

The nose opens sweet, with caramel apple up front. Honey, vanilla, rye grain spice, and charred oak build underneath. On the palate, sweet caramel and fruit come first, then turn to wood and rye spice. The finish is long and smooth, with spice, dried fruit, and a slow, gentle warmth.

The company's roots reach back to 1855, when a grocer sold wine and spirits. The rye has its own trophies too. At the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, it won Double Gold. It also took Gold with 95 points at the 2020 New York International Spirits Competition. The 2020 Ultimate Spirits Challenge gave it 97 points.

At full barrel strength, it rewards a slow pour. Try it neat, add a few drops of water, or build a bold Manhattan. Smoked brisket, aged cheddar, pecan pie, or dark chocolate all make good partners.
