Wild Turkey Austin Nichols Archives Gold Foil Edition is the first bottle in a new yearly series. It is a 16-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon from the Lawrenceburg distillery. Associate Master Blender Bruce Russell came up with the idea more than a decade ago. He chose the barrels from the Camp Nelson F, D and E rickhouses.

The name looks back to Wild Turkey's gold foil bottles of the 1980s and 1990s. Fans call those vintages "Cheesy Gold Foil," and collectors still hunt for them. It also honors the Glut Era. In those years, Jimmy Russell often blended older barrels into standard bottlings, which gave them extra depth.

The whiskey aged in charred American oak and is bottled at 120 proof. It is non-chill filtered, so you get the full texture. Expect dark fruit, mature oak and cherry cola from the first sniff. Clove and dark honey fill out the palate. The finish is extremely long, with peppery spice, brown sugar and leather.

The packaging is part of the fun. The canister shows an autumn hunting scene and has a gold foil lining. The label is modeled on the original vintage design. Look closely, because each release in the series hides its own Easter egg.

Pour it neat, and take your time with it. A drop or two of water will tame the proof and bring out more fruit. Smoked brisket, pecan pie or dark chocolate make good company. This is a bottle for Wild Turkey loyalists and serious collectors alike.
