The origins of Wild Turkey date back to the post-Civil War era when the Ripy brothers established a distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. This distillery operated for nearly fifty years before the advent of Prohibition. After the Prohibition era ended, the Ripy Brothers Distillery was revived. It was during this period that an executive named Thomas McCarthy took some samples of the distillery's maturing whiskey on a turkey hunt with friends. The following year, these friends requested more of the "wild turkey whiskey," leading to the now-famous name of the brand.
