WhistlePig 18 Year Old Rye Whiskey is the oldest whiskey in the WhistlePig lineup. The brand calls it Double Malt Rye. It spends 18 years in oak before it is bottled. Each bottle is then filled by hand at the WhistlePig farm in Shoreham, Vermont. It comes out at 92 proof, or 46% ABV. Every yearly edition wears a handmade glass topper crafted in Vermont.
The name comes from the grain. The mash is 79% rye, 15% malted rye and 6% malted barley. That mix of malted grains is unusual for American rye. WhistlePig says the idea goes back to early farmer-distillers. They malted a small share of their grain to help fermentation get going. The rye brings peppery spice, while the malt adds softer floral and earthy tones. Recent editions also finish in Spanish Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
The nose is sweet and aromatic. You will pick up toasted almonds and caramel, with a faint note of smoked maple. The first sip arrives with a warm rush. It then settles into light sweetness and grassy rye spice. A soft honey note stays in the background. The finish lasts a long time and is full of dried fruit. Every edition shifts a little, which is part of the fun for regular buyers. Comparing one release with the next can be a great tasting night with friends.
WhistlePig lists a Gold medal from the New York World Wine & Spirits Competition for this 18 year rye. Reviewers rate it highly as well, and Drinkhacker gave it an A- grade. For many fans of aged rye whiskey, this is a bottle to save for a big night.
Pour a measure neat and give it a few quiet minutes before you taste. A few drops of water can open up the aroma. Take small sips and give each one time on your tongue. Skip heavy mixers, since they hide the detail. It goes well with grilled steak, smoked brisket, aged cheddar or a square of dark chocolate.
This rye is for patient sippers who enjoy deep, layered flavor. It also makes a memorable gift for anyone who collects fine whiskies.
