WhistlePig 10 Year is the rye that put this Vermont farm on the map. It is made from 100% rye grain and bottled at 100 proof. Each barrel spends at least ten years in new American oak. The whiskey was distilled in Canada, then brought to WhistlePig Farm in Shoreham for finishing and bottling.

That long rest gives you a rye with plenty of sweetness to balance the spice. On the nose you get butterscotch and toffee first. Vanilla follows, then clove and a twist of orange peel. WhistlePig's own notes add allspice, anise, oak and char. It smells rich, but the rye grain still peeks through.

Take a sip and the toffee turns to caramel and honey. Then the rye spice arrives, with a clear kick of black pepper. At full strength it feels big and round in your mouth. The finish runs long, with spice, butterscotch and a little oak lingering after each sip.

Critics have noticed. Wine Enthusiast scored it 96 points, one of the higher marks a rye has earned there. That kind of praise is part of why many bars keep a bottle on the back shelf for their best Manhattan. A quick word on the story behind it. WhistlePig was founded on a farm in Shoreham, Vermont, close to the Canadian border. The founder, Raj Peter Bhakta, worked with master distiller Dave Pickerell, who spent years at Maker's Mark. Together they set out to show how good an aged, all-rye whiskey could be. This 10 year bottling became the flagship that started it all. Today the farm also distills rye of its own, and the brand has added many older and finished releases. Still, this is the one most rye fans try first.
