Considered the original wheated bourbon, W.L. Weller C.Y.P.B. is a bottling that carries the weight of American whiskey history. The Weller name itself is woven into the story of Kentucky distilling, and is one that many sippers have come to recognize as excellent in quality.
On the nose, the bourbon offers warm caramel and brown sugar, a dusting of baking spice, and a faint orchard fruit note that hints at the wheat’s gentler influence. The mouthfeel is plush and velvety, with a mid-palate sweetness that reads more honeyed than cloying and a texture that feels almost creamy. Oak-driven notes of vanilla and toasted cooperage arrive in harmony with the spirit’s sweetness rather than overwhelming it, and the finish is long and comforting with oak tannins framing the sweetness late in the sip. The overall impression is of a bourbon built for slow sipping, almost contemplation, so that it reveals layers over time.
W.L. Weller C.Y.P.B. Bourbon won "Best Kentucky Bourbon" and "Category Winner" at the World Whiskies Awards. It was also awarded a Silver medal in 2024 one of its more recent awards, considering it was released back in 2018. By the time you're reading this, who knows, it may have won more!
The C.Y.P.B. release is often sought out by bourbon lovers all around the world. Why? The combination of heritage, wheated mash bill and careful barrel work is what elevates this expression above many mass market bourbons and makes it a collector’s and sipper’s favorite.
