Three Chord Amplify is a rye made for people who like their whiskey dry and spicy. The brand is based in Michigan. It blends a three-year-old rye that brings wood and spice with a younger, grassier rye. The ryes were aged in Kentucky and Indiana. The mash bill is 95% rye and just 5% malted barley.
That high rye count shapes every sip. It is bottled at 95 proof, enough to carry the flavor without much burn. In the glass it has a rich chestnut color.
Start with the nose. Rye spice comes first, with black pepper and a hint of black cherry. On the palate it feels chewy and full. Citrus peel and black pepper lead, with mild clove close behind. A touch of black cherry softens the edges. Some tasters also find cinnamon on the palate and the finish. The finish is silky, with a mild, pleasing warmth as the spice tapers off.
The Beverage Testing Institute gave it 93 points. That is a strong score for a rye at this price.
You can sip it neat or over a single cube. It also makes a sharp Old Fashioned or a spicy Manhattan. Pair it with smoked meats, sharp cheddar or dark chocolate. If you want rye that tastes like rye, and not like sweet bourbon, this belongs with your other whiskies.
