Storyhouse Spirits Straight Rye Whiskey is made in San Diego, California. Storyhouse runs a distillery, bar and lounge in a historic building in the East Village. Matt Kidd and Steve Kuftinec opened it in 2019. Kidd is a former Marine pilot who now runs the stills.

This rye rests for at least five years in charred oak barrels. Then it takes a short nap in Cabernet barrels from the company's sister winery. That wine finish gives it a softer, fruitier side than many young ryes. It is bottled at 90 proof.

Lift the glass and you get cigar box and vanilla. The palate builds in layers of mild spice, raisin and stone fruit. The finish is long, sweet and fruity, so the spice never feels harsh.

The whiskey has done well with judges. It won Gold with 92 points at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. That same year it took Silver at the Bartender Spirits Awards.

Pour it neat or over one large cube to see the fruit and spice side by side. It also brings real depth to a Manhattan, Old Fashioned or Sazerac. Pair it with smoked brisket, aged cheddar or pecan pie. You will like it if you want a rye that is easy to sip, not just to mix.
