Description

Southern Star Double Rye comes from Southern Distilling Company in Statesville, North Carolina. It’s a blend of straight rye whiskeys mixed in a set ratio. The blend then rests again in bourbon barrels. It’s bottled at 88 proof and pours a honey gold.

The nose is fresh and a little savory. You’ll find dill, coriander and green peppercorn over deep caramel. On the palate it turns full-bodied. Cinnamon and orchard fruit like apple fill the middle. The finish stays peppery, with vanilla and caramel slowly fading.

Judges like it. It took 2X Gold at the 2024 SIP Awards. At the ASCOT Awards it won Platinum in 2021 and Gold in 2024.

This rye is made for stirred drinks. Try it in a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned. It’s also good neat or over a single large cube. Serve it with grilled meats or a square of dark chocolate.

If you like your whiskey spicy with a sweet backbone, this is worth a spot on your shelf. The bourbon barrel finish softens the rye edge just enough.
