Description

Nevada H&C Distilling Co. makes Smoke Wagon in Las Vegas. For the Small Batch bottling, the team blends younger, rye-forward barrels with older, richer stock. The bourbon was distilled at MGP in Indiana. Its high-rye mash bill is 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley.

It ages in new charred oak and goes into the bottle at 100 proof. There is no chill filtering, so the natural oils stay in. That gives the whiskey a fuller feel in your mouth.

Caramel and vanilla rise first from the glass, with brown sugar and a twist of orange. The palate is lively. Bright citrus meets brown sugar, then comes a hot flash of cinnamon candy and peppery rye. The finish leaves clove, allspice and black pepper over light oak.

This bourbon has collected plenty of hardware. It took Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021.

Sip it neat to feel the full proof, or add a big ice cube to calm the spice. In an Old Fashioned, the citrus side really shines. It also holds up well in a Manhattan. Serve it with smoked barbecue, pecan pie or aged cheddar.
