Description

Scapegrace Classic Gin comes from New Zealand. Two brothers-in-law started the brand out of a shared love for gin. They make it in small batches in a copper pot still that dates back to the 19th century. The water comes from the Southern Alps. The spirit is bottled at 42.2% ABV.

Twelve botanicals go into every batch. Juniper leads, with lemon peel and plenty of orange peel. Coriander, cardamom and nutmeg add warmth. Angelica, liquorice and orris root give it backbone. Cloves, cinnamon and cassia bark finish off the mix.

Pour a little and smell it first. Juniper hits you right away. Soft floral hints of lavender and orange blossom follow close behind. A touch of cinnamon and nutmeg sits underneath. On the palate, citrus and juniper take the lead. It feels smooth, yet very crisp, with a gentle hum of spice. The finish lasts longer than you might expect. Waves of orange and mixed flowers keep coming back.

Judges have noticed this gin many times. It won Double Gold at the 2014 San Francisco Wine & Spirits Competition. It took Double Gold again at the 2019 International SIP Awards. It also earned Gold at the 2020 International Wine & Spirits Competition. Gold medals from Tastings.com in 2019 and the Gin Masters in 2018 round out the list. Wine Enthusiast scored it 90 points.

The house serve is easy to make at home. Mix 50ml of gin with 150ml of good tonic over ice. Add a slice of orange to bring out the citrus. It also makes a bright martini and a lovely negroni. Serve it with fresh oysters, smoked salmon or goat cheese. Herb-roasted chicken and a citrus salad work well, too.
