Description

Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye comes from Jimmy and Eddie Russell, the father-and-son master distillers at Wild Turkey. It is a Kentucky straight rye bottled at 104 proof. Every bottle is drawn from one hand-picked barrel. As a true single barrel whiskey, each one can show its own small twists.

The barrels get a No. 4 “alligator” char, the heaviest level. Many come from the middle floors of the rickhouse, where flavor tends to be most even. The whiskey is not chill filtered, so it keeps its rich amber color and full flavor.

On the nose you will find lemon, vanilla and spicy oak, with orange peel and ginger. The palate brings pepper, vanilla and tobacco. Then the finish leaves you with pear drops and cracked peppercorn.

Judges love it. It won Double Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and again at the 2023 TAG Awards. It also earned 96 points as a finalist at the 2021 Ultimate Spirits Challenge.

At 52% ABV it has plenty of warmth. Add a few drops of water or pour it over one big cube to calm the heat. Rye this spicy is also great in a Manhattan. Pair it with smoked meats, sharp cheese or dark chocolate. If spicy, full-flavored rye is your thing, this bottle deserves a spot on your shelf.
