Russell’s Reserve 6 Year Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey made at the Wild Turkey Distillery. It carries the name of Jimmy Russell and his son Eddie. Jimmy is a Bourbon Hall of Famer, and Eddie has worked at Wild Turkey since 1981. The rye joined the Russell’s Reserve line in 2007.

Eddie picks the barrels by hand. The whiskey rests for six years in new charred American oak, in the center of the rickhouse. It goes into the bottle at 90 proof. That gives you full flavor without too much heat.

Pour a glass and you’ll smell vanilla, caramel and toffee, with warm spice underneath. Whisky Advocate also finds orange slices and lemon peel. The first sip brings rye spice right away. Allspice and black pepper follow, wrapped in soft caramel sweetness. The finish is dry and spicy, with a peppery kick and light oak that hangs around. The brand links its closing sweetness to dried fruit.

Judges like it too. It won Platinum at the 2022 ASCOT Awards. It also took Silver with 93 points at the 2023 International Wine & Spirits Competition. Whisky Advocate gave it 90 points in 2022.
