Rickhouse is the non-chill filtered, cask strength bourbon from Gold Bar of San Francisco. It goes into the bottle at 103 proof with no cutting down to a standard strength.
The mash bill is 80% corn and 20% rye. The spirit is triple distilled in copper pot stills. It then ages in heavily charred new American oak. Before bottling, it passes over French oak staves for extra depth.
In the glass it has a ruby copper color. The nose brings toffee, molasses and coffee, with a soft hint of tobacco. Your first sip shows layered oak, more coffee, chocolate and burnt sugar. Vanilla, caramel and a little smoke follow. The finish is warm and swings between dry oak and lingering sweetness.
In 2021 the San Francisco World Spirits Competition handed it a Double Gold medal. A year earlier, The Tasting Panel Magazine rated it 94 points, a Gold. The Beverage Testing Institute also scored it 90 points in 2020.
Sip it neat, then try a few drops of water. It holds up well in an Old Fashioned too. Serve it with smoked brisket, BBQ ribs, aged cheddar, roasted pecans or bread pudding.
