RD One Double Finished in Oak and Maple Barrels comes from RD1 Spirits, a young Lexington, Kentucky, brand founded in 2020. It starts as a Kentucky straight bourbon aged at least four years. The maple comes in during finishing. French oak staves are treated with maple syrup using a patented mix of pressure, oxygen, time and temperature. Those staves then go inside the barrels to rest with the whiskey.

Maple syrup is the first thing you smell, with honey and graham cracker close behind. On the palate you get maple sugar candy, brown sugar and molasses. A light layer of oak keeps it from feeling heavy. The finish is long and sweet, with burnt caramel, brown sugar and more maple.

It is bottled at 99.9 proof, close to 50% ABV, so there is real warmth under all that sweetness. Judges noticed, too. It took a Double Gold medal and Best in Show at the 2024 TAG Global Spirits Awards. It scored 92 points there.
