Powers Gold Label is one of the best-known names in Irish whiskey. The Powers story began in 1791, when James Power opened his distillery on John’s Lane in Dublin. Today the whiskey is made at Midleton Distillery in County Cork. Its bottle shape nods to the old John’s Lane pot stills.

Gold Label is a triple-distilled premium blended whiskey. It mixes pot still and grain whiskeys, and the pot still side comes through loud and clear. Powers takes a tight cut from the heart of the run, trimming more of the heads and tails. The whiskey then matures in selected American oak casks. It is bottled at 43.2% ABV.

On the nose, you get cinnamon, clove and white pepper. Russet apple and ripe pear sit on a light base of charred oak. The palate brings more cinnamon, plus green pepper and nutmeg. Orchard fruit, vanilla and toasted oak follow, all resting on crisp barley.

The finish is long. Oily pot still spice slowly fades into rich barley and toasted wood. A touch of honey closes it out. It is a warming, full-flavored whiskey that still feels easy to drink.

Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible 2020 gave it 96 points. For many years it was also the best-selling whiskey in Ireland. Irish pubs still pour it every day.

Sip it neat to enjoy the spice. Or try it in an Irish Coffee, a Whiskey Ginger or a soda highball with a citrus twist. It goes well with aged cheddar, roasted nuts, grilled pork and apple desserts.
