Description

Peerless Straight Rye Whiskey comes from Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company in Louisville. The name dates to the 1880s, when Henry Kraver ran the original Peerless distillery in Henderson. His descendants, Corky and Carson Taylor, brought the brand back and restarted distilling in 2015.

Peerless does everything in-house, from grinding grain to filling barrels. It uses only a sweet mash, with fresh water and grain in every batch. The whiskey is never chill-filtered and goes into the bottle at barrel proof.

The nose is young and lively, with fresh oak, banana, corn sweetness, rye spice and pine. On the palate it stays well balanced. Maple and brown sugar lead, with a light citrus sweetness behind them. The finish is smooth, with a hint of oak and no harsh burn.

Critics have taken notice. Barleycorn named the Small Batch Rye its Best Rye Whiskey in fall 2023, with 94 points. It also made the Whisky Advocate Top 20 list at number 15.

Sip it neat or over a large cube to feel the full strength. It also makes a strong Sazerac or Manhattan. Pair it with grilled meats, sharp cheese or a rich dessert.
