Description

Old Whiskey River is a Kentucky straight bourbon made by Heaven Hill. It takes its name from Willie Nelson's song "Whiskey River," a hit after his 1978 live version. Nelson worked on the bourbon with his friend Shep Gordon. He tasted samples while on tour and helped shape the label and recipe.

The bourbon is aged six years and bottled at 86 proof, or 43% ABV. Its mash bill uses corn, rye and barley. Those grains came from family farms within 100 miles of the distillery. Each bottle shipped with a Willie Nelson guitar pick.

The nose brings caramel, vanilla and dried apricot, with a little baking spice. On the palate you taste more caramel and vanilla. Cinnamon spice, oak and a hint of cocoa follow. The finish is smooth and gently sweet, with toasted oak hanging on.

The first run came out in 2001, and the bourbon was discontinued by around 2017. Today it is much more of a collector's bottle than an everyday pour. If you do open one, enjoy it neat or on the rocks. It also makes a memorable gift for any Willie Nelson fan.
