Old Pepper Single Barrel Rye Whiskey is distilled at the James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington, Kentucky. Colonel James E. Pepper sold Old Pepper as the oldest and best brand of whiskey made in Kentucky. It was the first Kentucky label bottled at the distillery. His signature strip stamp even shaped the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897.

Today the distillery uses water from its historic well. The whiskey ages in new Kentucky oak barrels that are toasted and charred. The staves are air-seasoned for 18 to 24 months first. This bottling comes from one barrel and is bottled at barrel proof. That means each release tastes a little different from the last.

Expect a complex, balanced rye. Peppermint and wildflower honey rise from the glass. The full-bodied palate brings dark chocolate, mint and clove. The finish is smooth and long, with clove spice that lingers.

Because it is bottled at full strength, sip it slowly. Pour it neat or on the rocks, or stir it into classic cocktails such as a Manhattan. Colonel Pepper is also linked to the early days of the Old Fashioned, so that is a fitting choice.
