Oban 10 Year Old Special Release 2024 goes by the name Coastal Orchard. It comes from one of Scotland's smallest distilleries, in the harbor town of Oban on the west Highland coast. Diageo calls it a first for the distillery. The spirit spent its years in refill American oak. Part of it then went into freshly charred American oak seasoned with oloroso sherry. It is bottled at full cask strength, 58% ABV.

The name gives you a good clue about the taste. On the nose you get sweet, spiced apple, like a baked apple fresh from the oven. Sea-salted vanilla sits right next to it. On the palate, warm spice takes over, with nutmeg, cinnamon and a hint of clove. Fruit and a little sherry sweetness keep it rounded. The finish brings spicy oak and a touch of dried fruit.

There is no smoke here. Instead, you get fruit, spice and plenty of energy, with a gentle salty edge from the coast.

At this strength, take your first sip neat and small. Then add a few drops of water and see how the apple and vanilla open up. It goes well with smoked salmon, grilled seafood or aged cheddar. A square of dark chocolate is a fun match, too.

Special Releases come out once a year in limited amounts. If you like coastal whisky with a fruity, spiced side, this one is worth a spot on your shelf.
