Description

Taketsuru Pure Malt is a blended malt from the Nikka Whisky Distilling Company. It carries the name of Masataka Taketsuru, the founder of Nikka. He was the first Japanese person to study whisky making in Scotland, and many call him the father of Japanese whisky.

Nikka builds it from two of its own distilleries. Yoichi sits on the Hokkaido coast, and Miyagikyo lies near Sendai. The recipe leans on sherry-cask malts from both sites, plus malt from remade casks at Miyagikyo.

Lift the glass and you get fresh apple and apricot with a bittersweet edge. Toasty oak follows, with a soft hint of vanilla. The first sip feels light but layered. Banana and navel orange lead, then rich malt and a deep seam of peat. The finish brings sweet, slightly bitter dark chocolate, with mellow oak and a last wisp of smoke.

The judges like it too. It was named World's Best Blended Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards in 2023. It also won Best Japanese Blended Malt there in 2014. At the International Spirits Challenge, it has taken Gold six times between 2014 and 2024.

Pour it neat or over one large cube to enjoy its fruit and malt. It also makes a lovely highball with chilled soda. At the table, try it with smoked salmon, grilled meats or a square of dark chocolate. It suits newcomers and any seasoned whisky lover.
