Nikka Coffey Grain is a smooth, sweet Japanese whisky made mostly from corn. It gets its name from the Coffey still, an old style of column still. Nikka brought two of them over from Scotland in 1963. They work slowly and keep more flavor in the spirit. The whisky then matures in refilled, remade and re-charred American oak casks.
The nose opens with vanilla and sweet corn, a bit like good bourbon. A soft hint of chamomile and ripe melon follow. On the palate, it feels creamy and mellow. Vanilla sweetness meets melon and a fresh grapefruit lift. The finish leaves sweet corn and a gentle touch of citrus.
It has done well with judges too. Retailers note a Gold at the International Spirits Challenge 2020 and 92 points from Whisky Advocate.
Drink it neat, with a few drops of water, or on the rocks. It shines in a tall highball with soda, and works in easy cocktails too. Serve it with grilled meats, rich sushi or dark chocolate. If you want a soft, sweet whisky rather than a smoky one, start here.
