Description

Naked Malt is the whisky you may remember as Naked Grouse. The name and bottle changed, but the liquid stayed the same. It is a blended malt, so every drop comes from single malt Scotch. Malts from names like The Macallan, Highland Park, Glenrothes and Glenturret have gone into the mix.

The name comes from the casks. After the malts are blended, they rest for at least six more months in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. They are called "naked" casks because they never held whisky before. That gives the sherry room to shine, and it shows in the deep amber-gold color.

Your first sniff brings buttery toffee, crisp apple and sweet spice. Sip it and you find vanilla custard, stewed fruit, raisins and sultanas. The finish is warm and rich with sherried spice. It feels generous without being heavy.

It has a good record with judges, too. It won Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2019 and again in 2024. It took Gold at the International Spirits Challenge in 2020.

Sip it neat or over ice, or make it the base of an Old Fashioned or a Whisky Sour. Dark chocolate, smoked meats and roasted nuts all suit its sherry side. If you want an easy, fruity whisky for any night of the week, this one is worth a try.
