Michter's US*1 Single Barrel Rye is a Kentucky straight rye whiskey that comes from one barrel at a time. That means no two barrels taste exactly alike. You may notice small changes from one bottle to the next, and that is part of the fun. It is bottled at 84.8 proof, or 42.4% ABV.

Michter's starts with select American rye. The grain is sheared before cooking to pull more flavor from it. By law, a straight rye uses at least 51% rye and ages at least two years in new charred oak. Michter's uses fire-charred new American white oak barrels. The spirit goes into the barrel at a low 103 proof. The distillery feels this lower entry proof gives a richer whiskey.

The nose is fresh and lively. You get rye spice and a little citrus, with a light minty lift. On the palate, peppery spice meets sweet butterscotch and oak. It feels smoother than many ryes, so it is easy to sip. The finish is dry and spicy, and the pepper lingers.

The Michter's name has roots that the company traces back to 1753. The team bottles this rye when they judge it ready, not at a fixed age. At under 85 proof, it stays gentle enough to drink neat or on a rock.
