Minor Case Straight Rye Whiskey comes from Limestone Branch Distillery in Lebanon, Kentucky. Distiller Steve Beam named it for his great-grandfather, Minor Case Beam. That ancestor made rye whiskey before Prohibition. His old family crest, with the letters M, C, and B, still sits on the label.

The rye whiskey is aged for about two years. It then gets a finishing rest in cream sherry casks. That sherry time is where the dried fruit and soft sweetness come from. It is bottled non-chill filtered at 90 proof, in a flask-style bottle with a cork top. Limestone Branch first released it nationwide in February 2017.

Pour a glass and warm rye spice greets you first. Cherry, fig, and raisin follow, with a little orange and oak behind them. On the palate, a light rye pepper gives way to the sherry. Sweet cherries, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and clove fill in the middle. The finish is sweet and oak-driven, and it stays with you a good while.

This whiskey is easy to sip neat or over one large cube. It also makes a rich, fruit-forward Manhattan or Old Fashioned. For food, try dark chocolate, aged cheddar, roasted pecans, or a slice of fruit cake.
