Michter's US*1 Barrel Strength Rye is the full-power cousin of the brand's everyday Kentucky rye. Each bottle comes from a single barrel. Nothing is cut with water, so the proof changes from barrel to barrel.

The 2025 release averaged 110.5 proof, or about 55% ABV. Check the label on your bottle for its exact strength. The mash is mostly rye, with corn and malted barley in the Kentucky style.

Michter's Master of Maturation, Andrea Wilson, tastes and approves every release. She describes baking spice, dark fruit and toffee. Fragrant citrus and floral notes lift it on top. Master Distiller Dan McKee calls it a nice balance of sweetness and spice.

Expect a bold first sip that settles quickly. The finish is round, smooth and layered rather than harsh. Because it is single barrel, each bottle can lean a little sweeter or spicier than the last.

Start with a small neat pour. Then add a few drops of water and see how the fruit opens. It also makes a powerful Manhattan or Sazerac. Try it next to smoked meats, dark chocolate or a sharp aged cheese.
