Belfast’s whisky story began in 1776, and this makes it one of the oldest Irish whisky brands. It was later revived by the Belfast Distillery Company, which now operates a modern distillery inside the historic Crumlin Road Gaol. The brand proudly uses the traditional spelling “Whisky” to honor its original name before most Irish distillers adopted the “e.” Its signature release is a 5-Year-Old blended Irish whisky made from a mix of malt and grain spirits, and it matures in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels to build depth.
The whisky is bottled at 42% ABV, so it delivers a balanced strength without feeling heavy. You get light citrus notes along with peppery spice and soft vanilla on the nose, while the palate brings stone fruits, butterscotch, bourbon-cask vanilla, and a touch of white pepper. The overall taste is sweet, spicy, and gently oaky with a ripe fruit finish.
Although the original brand shut down in the 1930s due to challenges like fire and Prohibition, it returned around 2020 and has already earned global awards, including Gold at the Irish Whiskey Masters. The range also includes Sherry Cask, Cognac Cask, and Old Cromac Collection editions, and the brand is once again enjoyed worldwide.
