Mcconnell's Irish Whiskey

Description

McConnell's is one of the oldest names in Irish whisky. The brand was born in Belfast in 1776. It keeps the old spelling, "whisky" with no "e," as a nod to those early days. This bottle is the core release, a 5 Year Old blend of Irish malt and grain whisky.

The story has a long gap in the middle. American Prohibition cut off the brand's biggest market, and fire added to the trouble. By the 1930s it had gone quiet. The Belfast Distillery Company brought it back in 2020. In 2024 it opened a working distillery inside the old Crumlin Road Gaol, a Victorian prison in the city.

The whisky rests for at least five years in ex-bourbon barrels. It is bottled at 42% ABV, so it has a bit more body than many entry blends. On the nose you find bright citrus, a little pepper and soft vanilla, with a light floral edge. Sip it and ripe fruit comes in with butterscotch and bourbon-cask vanilla. White pepper keeps things lively. The finish is sweet and gently spicy, and the ripe fruit hangs on.

The brand has collected medals around the world, including Gold at the Irish Whiskey Masters. The range has also grown to include Sherry Cask, Cognac Cask and Old Cromac Collection bottlings.
