This 2020 Limited Edition Single Malt Japanese Whisky is made at the Mars Shinshu Distillery, also known as Hombo Shuzo. The distillery sits high in the Japanese Alps in Miyada village, Nagano, at around 800 meters above sea level, and it holds the title of Japan’s highest whisky distillery. The whisky is matured in a careful mix of casks, mainly ex-Sherry and American white oak, along with select ex-Bourbon barrels, and this blend creates impressive depth.
It is bottled at a strong 50% ABV and usually comes in 700ml or 750ml sizes. Since it is a small batch release with only about 15,000 bottles, it feels special yet approachable. The whisky is typically non-chill filtered with no added color, which keeps its character honest and full. You will notice aromas of plum jam, acacia honey, vanilla, ripe fruits, and a gentle touch of oak.
The taste brings citrus, orange blossom, cocoa, honeyed sweetness, orchard fruits, and light spices such as cinnamon and white pepper. Its texture is rich, smooth, and slightly oily, and the long finish moves from sweet notes to oak and warm spice. This edition also highlights the major upgrades at Mars Shinshu as the distillery shapes the future style of its Komagatake single malt.
