After a summer job bottling whisky as a lad, Graeme Macaloney fell in love with whisky-making and set out to make a living doing so on his own. After Studying the Irish pot still process of making whiskey and gleaning information on the maturation process from the renowned Dr. Jim Swan, Macaloney founded his distillery on Vancouver Island in Canada. To this day Victoria’s Caledonian Distillery operates alongside its brother, Twa Dogs Brewery, crafting whiskies with the finest tools and ingredients available. After applying his knowledge on the Islay traditional peat-smoking process, Dr. Graeme Macaloney recreated the method himself at his vancouver distillery. Taking the title “World’s Best” at the 2020 World Whiskies Awards, Macaloney's Caledonian Mac Na Braiche is the first single malt outside of Islay to use a soaker smoker to peat smoke Canadian Barley to 54 ppm. After maturing in Portuguese red wine barriques, Mac Na Braiche is non-chill filtered for beautiful color and flavor. On the nose is a light peat smoke with lemon, ash, heather, nutmeg and cinnamon layered in with floral, fruity, and strong malty notes. The palate is velvety smooth with warm peated smoke, spicy malt and hints of fruit leading into a lingering finish with sweet, malty floral notes with mingling hints of coconut, brine and smoke.
