The Macallan Fine Oak 17 Years Old is a single malt from Speyside, in the Scottish Highlands. It matured for at least seventeen years in three types of oak cask. Those include sherry casks and ex-bourbon casks. The whisky pours a light amber color and is bottled at 43% ABV.

The Macallan calls the nose heady, exotic and floral. You will find jasmine and tropical fruit, with a hint of peat underneath. On the palate it is soft and rich. Citrus, spice and a little wood smoke come through. The finish lingers, with a touch of orange zest at the end.

Critics liked it too. Malt Advocate, now Whisky Advocate, gave it 94 points in Spring 2006. Reviewer John Hansell noted creamy vanilla, light toffee and a kiss of honey. He called it a very refined, sophisticated whisky.

Start with it neat, and try a drop or two of water later. It goes well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or aged cheese. Roasted meats or a crème brûlée are nice matches too.

This bottle suits whisky lovers who enjoy a lighter, floral style of high-quality Scotch. It is also a lovely bottle to open with friends on a special night.
