Lágrimas del Valle Plata Benchetler Edition is a limited-run blanco with a story on the label. Pro skier and artist Chris Benchetler painted the artwork. He drew on the tequila itself and the land where its agave grows.
All of the 100% blue Weber agave comes from one ranch, La Sabina, in Romita, Guanajuato. The ranch sits about 1,760 meters up. Big temperature swings, strong winds and the odd frost stress the plants. That tough, slow growth packs the agave with sugar.
The tequila is made at Tequila Cascahuín (NOM 1123) in El Arenal, Jalisco. The agave is cooked in masonry ovens. Part of it is crushed by a stone tahona and fermented with wild yeast in open wooden tanks. It is double distilled in pot stills and bottled at 46% ABV, with no additives.
The importer describes hints of palo santo, chalk, guava and lightly roasted parsnip. On the nose, you get cooked agave and fresh herbs. The palate is bright and herbal, with a chalky edge and a touch of tropical fruit. The finish stays bright and herbaceous.
Sip it neat or lightly chilled to catch every detail. It also makes a standout Margarita or Paloma. Try it with ceviche, grilled fish or a citrus salad.
Collectors and single-ranch fans will want this one.
