Description

Lagavulin Distillers Edition is a smoky single malt from the island of Islay, Scotland. It goes through two maturations. First it rests in refill American and European oak casks. Then it is finished in American oak casks seasoned with Pedro Ximénez sherry. The sherry wood softens the peat. There is no age statement, but the brand lists this US release as distilled in 2006. It is bottled at 43% ABV.

The nose is intense peat with vanilla. A raisin sweetness keeps the smoke in check, and crisp, roasted malt sits behind it. On the palate it turns sweet and lush. Smoke fills your mouth, joined by a very salty tang, coffee, vanilla and a glimmer of fruit. The finish is very long, even by Islay standards.

It has a strong record in competition. It took Double Gold three times at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, in 2008, 2009 and 2011. The World Whiskies Awards named it Best Islay Peated Single Malt in 2007 and again in 2008.

Sip it neat, or add a drop of water to open it up. It pairs well with smoked meats, rich cheeses or a dark, sticky dessert.
